PIVOT at the Dive Bar in Raleigh, NC
I'm really picky about my metal. To tell the truth, it's not my favorite genre. Don't get me wrong, I love the energy and all that; it's just that there are so many times that it just sounds completely cheesy. Like the soft strings intro followed by the consistent pounding for the rest of the song- that stuff is so tired and over done.
But, you will not find this in Pivot. This band is an extremely tight and talented unit. Every last member on the stage is giving 110 percent and it shows. Damn, I guess I should start with the singer, Brian Kelly. See, it's ok of you can yell - and that takes some talent too. But, if that's all you got, it won't just won't cut it in my book. Mark my words: THIS GUY CAN SING! - A huge set of pipes, power, and a pretty incredible range. Hell, I should definitely use the word control here, cause he's got it.
Control, that leads us straight into the drummer, Phil Cicco. I know this guy's been playing drums for at least 10 years - one of the main reasons I went down to check this band out. I wanna see just about any drummer that's been playing that long. Damn, what was that Rush song they played right in the middle of their set - I think it was YYZ, that really fast and complicated one - he nailed every freaking beat, rock solid. Over on the far side of the stage we got the bass and lead; Mike and Eric Hambright. I'm not positive but, I'm gonna guess these guys are brothers. Hmmm...I wonder what gave it away? The same last name ? - or the fact that these guys are tight as glue. Mike is very consistent and stuck deep in the pocket of this band. Eric seems to be the crazy extension of this duo, always paying close attention to the bass, taking in the sound and pumping out complimentary licks. His jerky actions and buggy eyeballs are always shifting and moving with the music; a stage presence that not only is sort of funny and entertaining but, a good reflection of the entire bands' presence as well.
PIVOT is some fun, loud and entertaining music, I'm definitely going back for more. Goes good with vodka and don't forget your earplugs, cause you're gonna want get up close and personal.

Thanks for a great show.
